The hit Disney+ show, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, is a miniseries based on the Marvel Comics superheroes Sam Wilson, the Falcon and Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier. It is the second installment and the second television series of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the series being produced by Marvel Studios. The show follows the events of Avengers: Endgame, where Sam and Bucky team up and put aside their previous differences to thwart the plans of a global anti-patriotism terrorism group known as the Flag Smashers.
Marvel fans were excited to learn that there was going to be a series diving into two superheroes whose stories were not explored as much in the previous Marvel films. Bucky Barnes has had his character arc developed over several movie installments within the Marvel franchise, and the series would allow fans to see how Bucky is coping with the loss of his best friend and finding his footing within his new life. Sam Wilson’s story would also be explored as the new Captain America after Steve passed on his legacy, and how he will transition from being the Falcon to representing the nation of America. Sam and Bucky’s relationship and chemistry have shone through in the few moments they had together on the silver screen in Captain America: Civil War. Fans were excited to see how the dynamic will translate into the 6-episode series. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showed promise in developing these new storylines and further enhancing these on-screen characters, and managed to deliver what fans were asking for.
The show manages to tackle several problems that reflect our current society, such as racism, class difference, poverty, patriotism and carrying on a loved one’s legacy. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier introduces Isaiah Bradley, an African-American supersoldier whose legacy was buried in history due to the colour of his skin. Additionally, Sam Wilson must also deal with his newfound identity and legacy as an African-American man representing and symbolizing the United States, despite the racial conflicts that have plagued its past and present. The show also introduces John Walker, a new Captain America, who represents American patriotism and the pressures of retaining morals and deciding between right and wrong for the better good.
Through the intricate plotlines, incredible acting and character development, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has lived up to most Marvel fans’ expectations. The writers managed to handle societal issues and wove them into the storyline exceptionally, while still entertaining the audience. Despite this, there are some factors within the series that limit its potential, such as the poor portrayal and use of the several villains within the storyline and mediocre writing. Overall, the series is a wonderful addition to the MCU and sets up the story for the future of Captain America and the Winter Soldier.
