Daunte Wright a 20 year old African American man was shot on April 11, 2021.

He was shot by police officer Kimberly Ann Potter during a traffic stop and attempted arrest as his vehicle's registration tag had expired. Additionally, during state investigations it was revealed that the air freshener hanging from Dauntes vehicle was illegal within the state of Minnesota.

Body camera footage shows Daunte being stopped and three officers approaching his white Buick LaCrosse. Before being put in handcuffs, Daunte was shown to break free and return to his vehicle. Officer Kimberaly Ann is then shown pulling out her gun and yelling “Taser, Taser, Taser”, not long after shooting Daunte in the chest. Potter held her gun for seven second before discharging it. During the time of the shooting, officer Potter was field training another officer.

After Daunte was shot, he drove approximately 140 metres before colliding with another vehicle on the intersection of 63rd Avenue North and Katherine, he was dead on the scene at 2:18pm.

Dauntes mother spoke out about the incident and said Daunte called her, when the officers stopped him. She heard the police scuffling with Daunte, before the call ended she heard “Daunte don’t run.”

Mourners and protestors made their way near to the scene of his death. Police equipped with riot gear attempted to restrain the crowd, proving unsuccessful as it further angered the crowd, subsequently leading to protesters’ violence as they threw rocks at the officers. Protestors also looted more than 20 businesses during the riot, to which Wright’s mother replied with, “All the violence, if it keeps going it is only going to be about violence. We need it to be about why my son got shot for no reason… We need to make sure it’s about him and about smashing police cars because that is not going to bring my son back.” In an interview with ABC news, both of Wright's parents showed their appreciation to the people advocating for Daunte Wright but said to do it peacefully.

As for Kimberly Potter, she resigned after working for the Brooklyn Center Police for 26 years and is being charged with second degree manslaughter; justice is served.
